The Way Forward for High Speed Broadband (HSBB) in Malaysia

I'm currently using TMnet Streamyx as my broadband connection.
As TMnet users, we know that TMnet Streamyx offers some different packages.
Mine is the 1.0 Mbps package.

1 Mbps = max 120+Kbps for download speed

Of course I get the speed before :D
But it is really hard to achieve and not always get this speed T-T

(Suddenly.. my memory turn back to last 2 years.. It was really a hard time during the 2 years.. Walao! Just applied the service and get problem..problem..problem..problem..and problem..)

Today? Now? STill OK lar.. (MA MA DEI lar their services)
That's why is called as "TMnut Screamyx"..

Today I went to the site of its competitor, the JARING Communications Sdn. Bhd. website, I found an article which is written by the CEO of Jaring Communication Sdn. Bhd..

Here are some highlights from the article:

  • Firstly, we need to bring affordable broadband to every home within a reasonable period of time. Broadband should become a basic utility service like water and electricity. It should have the same price irrespective of geographical location and can be turned on if requested by any user who is willing to pay. Looking at the rising demand for advanced applications, we need at least 10 Mbps (megabits per second). In fact 100 Mbps should be the norm.

  • The government can play a certain role to make this happen. Firstly, it may have to provide seed funding either in the form of a grant or soft loan, especially for related civil works. This will help bring down the price to the end-users to trigger a snowball effect. Secondly, the government should amend certain laws and regulations to make broadband a basic utility. Every new building and road must be broadband-ready; this means preparing the trenches and laying the ducts for fibre optic cables. Of course, all existing roads must also be upgraded. Thirdly, the government should continue to monitor and maintain a competitive environment even after a self-sustainable state is attained. The concession status may then be reviewed.

  • I think we still have time to act and achieve something significant before 2020. But we must act for a long-term, self-sustainable goal. I strongly believe that with a comprehensive programme, we can improve our broadband by at least 10 times (if not 100) within 5 to 10 years and make it equally available in all populated areas (urban and rural) by roads. A parallel programme must also be initiated for other areas to achieve the universal service provisioning goal.
